kris’ good reads expedition: diary entry 7

For someone who hates rating books as much as I do, the rsi in my right hand is proof that I’ve been somewhat (see some of yesterday’s discussion) happy clicking away on Good Reads stars. *No reviews tho cos that would be taking this way too seriously.*

However, I’ve realised that I have multi-layers to what I think are ‘ok’ (from meh to not too bad at all) and ‘liked’ (from yeah, it was good to will definitely be reading the rest of this series) reads.

I guess it’s just too bad if this makes me look like either (a) a wimp or (b) a bitch.

It goes without saying that it’s more likely to be the latter.

Well, I don't know where the good reads rules are about star ratings but screw em. If I see someone gave a book 2 stars I'm going to assume that's a “don't waste your time” rating. Not “decent read but nothing memorable”. So I rate the way I assume most people would look at it. Where the hells were the rules about stars? Bah. I can rate how I like. I may have caved to multiple shelves but I refuse to alter my star ratings. I'm a rebel that way. I do sometimes wish they had half stars but I suppose that would get even more complicated.

  2. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Woo hoo. Damn the Man. Go Tam!

If you roll over the stars they tell you what they're meant to be. At least, that's how I found out about it.

“I do sometimes wish they had half stars..”

Bite your tongue! No fucking way do I want half stars. Whole ones are bad enough!

  3. Unknown's avatar Tam says:

Ahhh, now I see. The only thing is the difference between 2 and 3. Not ALL that much different. I'm keeping mine as I have them. 2 not recommended, 3 recommended but won't blow your socks off likely. As if anyone is paying attention to my ratings anyway. LOL

  4. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

What do you mean?! Of COURSE people will be watching our ratings etc at GR. We friggin' rock!

  5. Unknown's avatar Sean Kennedy says:

No, Tam, I agree. So many times I've wanted that half star, because then do you mark down or up? Sometimes that 0.5 makes a world of difference.

  6. Unknown's avatar Lily says:

I've only put stars on about a third of the books on my list. The rest I haven't bothered with yet. Maybe one day when I find lots of extra time.

    OK, maybe never then πŸ™‚

  7. Unknown's avatar Wren says:

*humming* (s)he's a rebel and (s)he'll never ever be any good…

I must say I am just dang happy that I decided noes to the stars.

  8. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Sean: I'm not usually an either/or person (hey Libran here), but to me it comes down to (a) did you like the book and (b) would you recommend someone spend their hard earneds on it. Maybe that's materialistic (or another word) of me, but I think the latter especially makes all the difference between a like and an ok read as well as a half star.

I also think/hope that people will look at more than one opinion of a book before they purchase it. When I do, I tend to look at a couple of people's POVs like Jen, Lily, Kassa, Val and Emmy and then make up my mind from there.

Lily: Considering how anal you are about your shelves, I reckon it's opnly a matter of time before you add the rest of your stars. LOL.

Wren: Are you gonna do reviews then, Wren?? With me it was either a do one thing of the other with ratings being the relatively easy option.

  9. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

I only added a few stars and that mostly for the ones I really really like.
But I am done re shelving! I could have read or reread a nice book in that period though

  10. Unknown's avatar Tracy says:

I rate on Goodreads like I would on my blog. I even give/write in 1/2 and 1/4 marks, cuz I like to fuck with people that way. πŸ™‚

  11. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Ingrid: Yay for you! I'm done reshelving too in terms of just doing my recommended/luv 'em reads.

Yanno, I think we might have done opposites – you with your shelving and a few stars for your faves and me vice versa. LOL.

Tracy: You write in 1/4s and 1/2s?? You're right – you is mean.

  12. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

Despite the edit option it is some job. And I have a lot less books then you have Kris!
    Good luck *g*

  13. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Ingrid, I'm going with the theory that less is more. To this end, I will NOT be shelving any more than my recommended reads. I JUST WON'T!!!

  14. Unknown's avatar Jenre says:

I've got another conundrum. I've been sent a request by someone who has no m/m books or even romance books on her shelves. I don't know this person at all. I'm worried that she may be a tad offended by my choice of reading so I'm thinking of 'ignoring' her request.

What's the etiquette on this, oh experts of the Good Reads?

  15. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Happened to me too, Jen. *shrugs* I accepted and I figured it's up to them to decide whether they hate me and my reading habits or not. Given this, I won't be offended if they decide to ditch me in the end. πŸ™‚

  16. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

I would accept but not do anything with it.
Some people just “collect” friends. I have seen it before on other sites. There is nothing you can do about it.
What I donΒ΄t like are the men from the Middle east/india/pakistan who want to be my friend. But I have not seen them on GR.

  17. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

“What I donΒ΄t like are the men from the Middle east/india/pakistan who want to be my friend. “

    o_O The mind boggles.

  18. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

I used to be ( well still am) on another site. There you got friendship notices from men who wanted to be my special friend etc etc. It was annoying.

  19. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Eeek. Sounds a bit sleazy. Poor you.

  20. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

I was not the only one but still.

  21. Unknown's avatar Jenre says:

Eww, Ingrid. That's just creepy. Unless, of course, you were thinking of becoming a male order bride for a middle eastern man – or even considering joining a harem.

Kris: OK, I'll friend this woman and see what happens.

  22. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

You get used to it Jen. Ignore is the best thing to do. If one of them really got annoying he could be deleted.

  23. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

    A male order bride, Jen??

Ingrid, do you have something you wanna share with the rest of us or does Jen just have wishful thinking?

  24. Unknown's avatar Jenre says:

I've obviously got males on the brain.

  25. Unknown's avatar Ingrid says:

Not really. These guys were annoying.

  26. Unknown's avatar Wren says:

Not to be too pollyanna or anything, Jen, but maybe you will open the eyes of this person who wants to be your friend to the wonderful world of m/m! *birds sing and butterflies hover*

    Ingrid: That's just weird.

Kris: I'm just going to use my recommended shelf for the books I really, really like, and let the rest fall where they may.

  27. Unknown's avatar Jenre says:

Wren: Nice idea! or maybe she'll de-friend me once she finds out that I'm a pervert :).

  28. Unknown's avatar Tracy says:

Well I don't want to just put 3 stars if I'm rating the book 3.75 stars, right? But yet I don't want to go that extra step and give it 4 stars if I don't think it qualified. I know, over thinking things.

  29. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

    Ya think, Tracy?!

Jen, Saviour of Romance Readers, one m/m story at a time. πŸ˜‰

  30. Unknown's avatar Thea says:

Ok, all I have to say is, this lolcat KICKS ASS!!!!!!

    *ahem*

    That is all.

  31. Unknown's avatar Kris says:

Gee, Thea. Thanks for dropping by and contributing and stuff. *rolls eyes*
