Ingrid: I don't know the term but I have read a story on PL Nunn's site which had a creature like that in it and I've seen pictures of them around and about.
I must say some of the worst covers I've seen are from that site. I love shifter stories but I like them either all human or fully shifted. I don't really like bits and pieces popping over from one to the other.

0_o I see Changeling Press is still true to its reputation. What a disaster. I showed this to my friend and when I said it was a tail, she said “Oh, I though she had an arm coming out of her ass”. I've never bought from this pulisher and frankly, seeing their awful covers, I don't even want to check out the books because you feel they can't be much better. Maybe unfair, but appearances DO matter, a lot.

JenB, that cowgirl cover is a travesty. I really don't think it does the story justice based on what I read. The author must have been stunned by their choice. I hope to god he was stunned.
Other Jen: I've read some stories by Misa Izanaki where one of the characters actually got body mods so that he has a tail that twitches and I think the ears too and there are some characters in the stories that can shift half-way. I'm trying to remember if they had half-way sex. I don't think its hentai, but I'm not 100% sure, its really not my thing although I did enjoy the stories I read by that author.
Tam, I found out later hentai is very explicit yaoi. One wonders how more explicit it can go.

Lily: How many tails does that dude have?! I've read some stories where the protags do a partial shift and it works really well. However, when it happens in a sex scene I always get a bit squicked and suffer from disbelief. I mean, if some guy shifted while you were having sex you can't honestly tell me that you wouldn't freak. Weird.
Mary: I agree. Although I don't buy my books solely for book covers (blurbs and excerpts get equal weight), they are the main hook for me. I know that I'm not alone in this and some epublishers need to seriously get with the program.
Smokinhotbooks: Yup. You get some damned sexy stuff in a lot of the print and a few of the larger epubs who have the $$ to commission excellent covers, but the rest vary from good, bad, ugly and to never-ever-should-have-seen-the-light-of-day-WTF-were-they-thinking.

I believe I can solve the mystery of some of the Japanese terms. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a mostly human character with cat ears and tail is called a neko. Kitsune are shapeshifting fox spirits. The number of tails a kitsune has indicates his or her rank. Nine tails is the highest level, although I usually avoid trying to figure out what that would look like.
