As I’ve mentioned a couple of times, I had the reading slumpity to end all slumpities in 2011.
Out of curiousity, I looked my goodreads shelves to see what the difference was between the number of books I’d read in 2011 to those in 2010.
It shocked the hell out of me.
I mean, I knew the severity of my mental illness caused me to have a lack of interest in all the things I usually love/d doing, especially reading, but I just hadn’t realised the full extent of it.
So, in 2011, I read 155 books and, in 2010, I read 450.
Yeah. That’s quite a slump I had – and still have – going.
What about others? Have you found yourself reading more or less in the last couple of years and why?

I just recently found myself in a slump….I read 450 books in 2011 (many shorts though) and suddenly about two weeks ago, nothing is appealing. I am still buying like 30 books a month, but not reading at the rate I started out last year. Maybe cause we are gearing up to move and have been for a month, but I found myself looking at my tbr list, and not finding anything interesting. I used to be able to open my faves list and find something there that appealed, but not even that is working. Maybe I just need a break? I hope so, cause I have like 250 books tbr…..yeesh!
Like Elaine I had around 450 (I know there are some that aren't recorded there, so maybe 460) but probably 2/3 of those are shorts/novellas. Having the other blog forces me to keep up my short consumption. Last long book I read … *shrug* I've started several, got about 20 pages in, then went and found something else, 20 pages later looked for something else. No reason, not bad books, just can't hold my interest. Sigh.
We'll see how it goes this year. So far, I'm not very motivated to read anything but shorts, but I try not to stress over it, but I do of course. My reading is hormonal, and every month when I lose interest, I panic, then it comes back. Wash, rinse, repeat.
This year I read pretty close to what I read last year – and it probably would have been nearly the same if I hadn't gotten hooked on Reversi and Mahjohng on my tablet for the last few weeks of the year.
I did get a little burned out on Christmas stories last month, but rereading the PsyCop series fixed that.
I read 240 last year (incl audio) and actually was a bit disappointed by that. I suppose that's an average of nearly 5 a week though, so not too shabby and most of the books were full length novels I think. I've been reading less since I discovered Twitter though! I've only been recording this since last year because I added everything onto goodreads early last year, but my sense is that I'm reading about the same or maybe a smidge more.
Elaine: @50 books in your tbr?? Yeesh, indeed, you book slut, you. 😉
I used to continue to buy in the beginning, but now I'm like 'whatever'. I have print upon print stacked in my bedroom and I keep on looking at them and then wandering back to where ever the hell I was before that. 🙂
Tam: Toy poodle flu. You have it.
Didn't you have a period during 2011, though, when you read a whole heap of long-for-you books?? I *vaguely* recall you blogging about it…
Chris: “… if I hadn't gotten hooked on Reversi and Mahjohng on my tablet… “
zOMG! You did something other than gobble books up?! I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you!
I plan to talk about rereading things in my next post. Don't jump ahead! 🙂
Kaetrin: Remembering your reading lists from your blog, I think most of your books are longer length novels as opposed to the shorts that Toy Poodle Tam reads. ;P
“I've been reading less since I discovered Twitter though!”
Ha! Ha! I say. And did you see that Ingrid has joined Twitter too?? Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Yes rub it in will you?? And will you please take notice of my member name??
At least I had time to read. Only thing that stopped me was money. But I am not sure if I would have found 30 books to buy each month. Even if I could.
veri:killim. better then killher, right?
Ingrid: I ADORE your Twitter name. In fact, you are the first person for 2012 to win The Minion of the Month award.
You're welcome.
I'm pretty sure that I would have been able to find 30 books to buy. I would have seen it as a challenge. LOL
“eri:killim. better then killher, right?”
Are you trying to say something or what?!
Weirdly I read exactly the same number of books in 2011 as I did in 2010! 0_0 However, breaking that down I read far more m/m in 2011 (94 books) than I did in 2010 (30 books) *grin*
I hope 2012 will be better for reading (and lots of things 🙂 for you. *hugs*
Last year was up and down in my reading rhythm but I hit rock bottom at the end of 2011. That's when I started to work and in December I read half a book…half!!! I shocked the ever livin' bejeezus outta me. I always said; no matter what's going on in my life, reading is my oases. Yeah…well, that got nixed the minute I worked 8-11 hours a day on a 0-4 year old kiddie daycare group.
At the end of the day I'm sitting on the couch like a zombie and only want to do some TV watching. So my reading habbits didn't change due to a slump but more due to time constrictions & a new worklife.
Have a great weekend, hon. I think of you often (((hugs)))
Orannia: The same amount of books? That is weird. 😉 Maybe you have some sort of reading counter in your sub-conscious. Hey, stranger things have happened.
And more m/m. Heh.
Leo: zOMG! Only half a book! You must have had major withdrawals. LOL
But, on a fun note, you did get to make xmas decorations with the kidlets. You gotta take what you can get. 🙂
I think of you too, and I miss you. *squishies*
*clutches pearls* ohhw my second nomination!
I want to thank the academy and my parents, my friends, my neighbours, my butcher and Kris of course for making this possible!
Ingrid: I knew you'd be totally thrilled with the honour.
Also, it's about tine you thanked your butcher. Just sayin'.
