Still being as bored as bat shit, I decided to start a series about those firsts we often have whilst reading.
This can be anything from the first genre, the first theme, the first scenario, etc, etc and, because I’m nosy, I thought it would interesting to share with each other what we might have thought about the firsts then and what we may think about them now.
As it seems to be a fave with a certain US redhead and it definitely is in every other m/m romance I’m reading at the moment, I thought there was no better place to start than with, you guessed it, rimming!
I’m honest enough to admit that my reading of erotica and of m/m romance has sometimes felt like a crash course in sex ed. To begin with, I skimmed the parts of the book where I had no friggin’ idea what was going on. *Hell, yes, I was once that innocent.*
Phil moved the sensual assault down Brandon’s spine, leaving a trail of heated kisses and long, rough laps of his tongue. Brandon shifted to allow his cock more room, the shaft rising to full engorgement by the time Phil had slid down to taste Brandon’s ass.
A wet jab at his asshole made Brandon jerk and push back, encouraging more of the same. Phil ignored the silent request and lavished a series of licks and sucking kisses over the sensitive crease and the puckered skin around Brandon’s entrance.
Spreading his legs wider, Brandon clenched the sheets and held on. He knew once Phil started eating him out, it would be a slow, agonizingly delightful event that would leave him on the verge of coming. Phil wouldn’t stop until he had Brandon begging for more. And Brandon knew he would. Nobody rimmed like Phil did. No one made him feel the way this man did.

Yes, I was squicked. Having said that, one of the reasons I was in this case was because the relationship between Phil and Brandon was shitty to say the least.
The second time I noticed rimming was in a short story by T A Chase. In this, the protags used cling/saran/plastic wrap for protection. Healthy, yes. But was it sexy?? Errr…
Now, a couple of years of reading later, I enjoy the smexiness of a good rimming scene from my safe little bubble of assumptions. Developed here, these are:
Rimming assumption #1: It’s clean.
Rimming assumption #2: Farting and other bowel movements have not ever happened from this arse. Ever.
Rimming assumption #3: It’s not only clean, but has been waxed, polished and buffed.
Rimming assumption #4: Looks and smells like a rosebud and tastes like strawberries.
So, that’s me, but what about you? What was your rimming first? What did you think of it then and what do you think now?
C’mon. ‘Fess up. No one’s gonna take the piss out of you *much* here. 🙂

About Kris
Reads, rants, randoms & R+s. You've been warned. BTW, don't follow me if you're a GLBTQQphobic wanker. It won't end well. For you.
God, rimming is like blow jobs now, can't think of a book that doesn't have it. Ummm. Well, one of the first books I ever read was Crossing Borders and I'm pretty sure it's got rimming in it. Was I squicked out? I don't think so because it didn't give me buckets of details and it wasn't like a half-hour session of it. Don't tell me what it tastes like … PLEASE (unless it tastes like strawberries or chocolate.)
I suppose it's one of the most intimate things you can do, more than smexing itself, because really, we all grow up with our parents going “Don't put that in your mouth, you don't know where it's been” and the idea that a mouth should only have clean stuff in/near it so I suppose there is some ingrained resistence. I do enjoy reading it but more from the receivers perspective than the givers, hence no descriptions of taste and smell are required … or wanted, really, I mean it.
Rimming… hhhuuummmm.
my husband bent over when he was nekkid once and ever since I have skipped all rimming scenes LOL!
I think all of Kris' points apply… especially the point about this is a virgin arse… as in NEVER been used for any bodily fuction what so ever!!!!
Alright back to bed…
tish
HEHE! Loved all your asumptions, and i too would like to believe each and every one of them if i read a rimming scene. Personally id rather read about anal or 6 hour blowjobs than rimming, it doesnt curl my toes, and if i do read it like Tam said i dont want descriptions of taste or smell, no siree thank you very much thats one time i dont need a full description of a scene. =D
Rimming??? Ick, Ick, Ick! I'm afraid that even your four assumptions don't help this squicked-out reader, ha, ha!
Dang, I can't remember which was the first rimming scene I read. I do remember initial squickiness, but since most writers avoid the things that are likely to squick the reader (or have I been lucky there?), I just read and don't think too deeply about it.
I've realized there's not a lot that squicks me out anymore. I must be getting old and jaded.
Okay, golden showers and scat, I'll give you that, but otherwise if it's not floating my boat it's just “meh”.
Nope, can't stand rimming. Hair and other things are involved.
MAYBE in the shower it's acceptable. I admit it, I am a rimming bigot.
I've already told you all (or at least all of you who visit my blog anyway) what my first rimming scene was, The Dark Horse by Josh Lanyon, and my reaction to that scene.
I agree with Tam, it's the intimacy, as well as the slightly taboo nature which is a bit of a turn on.
I do like there to be some emphasis on cleanliness. I *know* it's not all strawberry smelling or tasting but I at least like to think that area has been near a shower recently.
I read a really good rimming scene in a book this week, Snow on the Mountain by PD Singer. The whole rimming thing was quite a big deal and added something to the relationship between the heroes, making it less just a gratuitous sex act and more meaningful.
Lol@Tam, you have read to many books!
Although is there such thing as reading too many books??
Back on topic, I can't remember my first rimming scene in a book. And as I said earlier this week it feels like every book has at least one scene these days.
Sex in bathroom, tick
bj on couch, tick
rimming, tick
hmmm..my first rimming..I don't remember. The last one I just read was an Ava March book..but it seems to be popping up a lot these days.
I an very intrigued by it…it doesn't gross me out..I am more fascinated by it at this point. I like to read the receiver's reaction.
There is no way it can be enjoyable for the giver…I mean, right? But..for the receiver..hmmm 😉
I love when the author describes the taste as dark and spicy..uh sure.
Ingrid: LOL!
and so true :).
LOL Here I am cooking and preparing for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow and I take a break to check out some blogs and the first thing I see is rimming. To go from pumpkin pie to ass licking…oh my!
I don't recall the first book I read with rimming in it, but for m/f rimming it was probably one of Lora Leigh's “Bound Heart” books (menage 2men/1woman).
For m/m it had to be either “The Assignment” by Evangeline Anderson, or “Male of the Species” by Kate Steele.
There was rimming in The Assignment? I'm going to have to go back and find it 🙂
Mandi, I was just going over that book in my head. I don't think there is any rimming in it.
Not one of Evangeline's book have, if I remember well.
LOL – I had the same reaction – how the heck do I not remember rimming in The Assignment??
I don't know if The Assignment had rimming I named it because those were the first 2 m/m books I read and I know one of them had it in it.
Tam: Rimming is becoming the new BJ isn't it at the moment. It's like a whole bunch of authors suddenly realised that there was new act they could include in their sex scenes and, boy, have they!
You mentioned that taste thing a couple of times, Tam. I'm pretty sure we now know what your opinion of that is… even if you are old and jaded. 😉
Tish! God, graphic image much.
“as in NEVER been used for any bodily fuction what so ever!!!!”
Except fucking of course or does that not count as a bodily function??
Claire: Not taste or smell. Got it. I'm thinking that there might be a couple of authors that you need to stay clear of (eg descriptions of earthy musk, etc, etc). Just a warning.
Val: I think this is the first time that I've discovered something that's totally squicked you out. I'm writing this day down. LOL.
Chris: I think you've been lucky, hun, because it sounds as though you've mainly read the scene from the receiver's perspective. See Tam's comments re: taste. 🙂
Mandi, I suppose the pleasure/joy comes from doing something your partner gets pleasure from. I'll be honest, giving a BJ doesn't do anything for me sexually, but knowing your partner enjoys it makes it pleasurable enough.
I was starting to feel pervy there with everyone vowing rimming was totally off limits. But I wondered if everyone was reading YA m/m because it's EVERYWHERE as Ingrid noted. Thankfully Jen and Mandi stepped up and made me feel better. LOL
Katiebabs chook: And here I thought doing this post just for you might make you an insta-convert. LOL.
Jen: I agree that there is definitely an intimacy to the act and when it is coupled with a depth of feeling between the two protags it does make it more meaningful and thus more convincing for the reader.
Ingrid, LOL!! Very true. I remembered our earlier discussion when I was writing this post. Rimming seems to have taken over from fisting as the new 'must add' in m/m romance.
Mandi: “I love when the author describes the taste as dark and spicy..uh sure.”
I could say something really gross here, but I'm trying to restrain my inner-13-yr-old-boy-child-sense-of-humour.
I like to read the receiver's POV too. As Tam pointed out, I think much the receiver's enjoyment – well, from what I've read anyway *wonders where Matthew is when we need him* – comes from how much the guy getting the rimming is enjoying it.
MsM: “LOL Here I am cooking and preparing for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow and I take a break to check out some blogs and the first thing I see is rimming. To go from pumpkin pie to ass licking…oh my!”
LMAO! I'd say I was sorry, but…
BTW, I think you've just singlehandedly sent everyone to reread The Assignment. LOL. These girls are obsessed.
Lora Leigh. *snort* It wouldn't surprise me. I think I've only come across one m/f – which was actually m/m/f – that had rimming in it and it was actually the chick who was the giver. That's the first and only time I've ever read that as a scenario.
Tam: “I was starting to feel pervy there with everyone vowing rimming was totally off limits. But I wondered if everyone was reading YA m/m because it's EVERYWHERE as Ingrid noted. Thankfully Jen and Mandi stepped up and made me feel better. LOL”
Good to know that there are other perves like you out there, isn't it, Tam. 😉
We shall begin our scholarly discussion of The Assignment tomorrow, apparently, after we all reread. 😉
I keep hearing how great The Assignment is. What makes it such a great read?
I'm like some kind of weirdo who never found The Assignment all that intriguing. Sorry, I know that's a sacrilege or something. That and Bareback. Okay but meh.
I think the assignment is considered a double GFY. *shrug*
Chris, naturally. LOL.
Katiebabs chooks: People either love or hate this one. Those who love it – and I'm one 🙂 – are fans of the GFY theme as well as the friends-to-lovers scenario. If you don't like either of these as well as dub con due to external factors then I'd give it a miss.
Tam: Are you still being stoned to death?? LOL. The Assignment is not without it's issues, but I'm still a fan. As I am with Bareback too, although with this one there was a whole heap of stuff that I absolutely hated. *I'm pretty sure I just fucked the grammar in that sentence, but who cares!*
Friends turned into lovers is one of my favorite romances.
If you are going to rim someone, why not with your BFF?
*snort* True.
I'm not sure why The Assignment didn't really work for me. I like GFY and FtoL. Maybe I heard so much about it that it was impossible to live up to the hype? Or maybe one of the characters just didn't appeal to me so I didn't care? It's been forever so who knows. Maybe I should reread it. Maybe I'll love it this time.
Maybe it was a hype thing. Reread it and let us know what you thought of it this time. After all this, I'll probably be rereading it myself. 🙂
I'm one who didn't love The Assignment. I got so tired of the – I have feelings but I can't say it because it is all pretend. Sorry – pretend stops once you hump each other all night.
I did like Tere Michels' Faith and Fidelity – that was a good friends to lovers..imo.
Mandi, you're definitely not alone in your opinions about The Assignment and I can absolutely see your POV. As I said, I also had probs but I was able to dismiss these pretty easily cos I'm such a rabid fangirl of the themes.
I'm definitely with you on F&F. For me, it was the characterisation and the lack of external factors seeming to force the physical relationship which made this the more convincing read.
You know I think we've come up with a good topic for a post. 🙂
Hmm, the first rimming scene I remember was actually from watching QAF. And that one was hot, btw. I've subsequently read it in several m/m books, but don't remember the first (probably since I was already well acquainted with it). Jen, like you, I do like to imagine them showering first or something.
And, umm, not going into detail or anything, but I think a lot of guys giving it actually enjoy it.
Richelle, was that the one that Jen had up on her blog cos damn straight that was hot!
“And, umm, not going into detail or anything, but I think a lot of guys giving it actually enjoy it.”
Dammit Richelle! You know I hate it when someone hints and then leaves. 😦 Speak!!
OMG every time I visit your blog I find a reason to blush. Seriously, your assumptions made me snort!
Kris 'n' Good Books: Going places were everyone else has the good taste not to go! LOL.
FV, and do you think that the fact my Mumma also reads this will stop me… Hell No! Anyways, she's a teacher so it's all about being edjumactional.
Consider yourself warned about the firsts to come! *mwahahahahahaha!*
Yes, that was the one! You should really watch that series if you haven't seen it. I think all 5 seasons are on youtube (if you don't mind watching in 10 min segments).
As for the other . . . umm, let's just say personal experience and leave it at that. 😛
I was expecting this post to be about your first rimming experience. Gotta say now I'm both relieved and disappointed at the same time.
Want me to tell you about my first rimming experience? *evil grin*
I honestly have no idea which book popped my rimming cherry. Most likely because I'd already had the act performed on me, so I didn't think twice when I saw it in a book.
HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA. Woooooot! TMI THURSDAY!
Oh but u know wut? I read a porn story once in which there WAS farting. And brown streaks on the towels used for clean-up.
Hey, skin is skin, and clean skin is clean skin. Doesn't matter where it is on the body. Navel rimming, armpit rimming, ear rimming. Clean = good to go. (I think I'd draw the line at nose rimming, though. Damned schnozzes are always exreting something.)
I think readers choose to assume this, because dental dams just don't cut it in erotic romance. Nothing wrong with that; fiction authors aren't writing textbooks, after all.
No way can I remember where I read my first anything related to sex. Some experiences just get lost in the mists of time.
Oh, by the way, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
😀
You know…I'd rather read about unwashed ass rimming than read about a tongue going into a belly button. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
Richelle, I'd share with you if I was the one with experience. I think. Maybe. 🙂
JenB: “Want me to tell you about my first rimming experience? *evil grin*”
Why not. We already know how often you have anal sex a month. *hehehe*
“I read a porn story once in which there WAS farting. And brown streaks on the towels used for clean-up.”
Geez, Jen. Thanks for sharing that piece of rankness with us all.
Oh, and what's your deal with belly button fluff???
KZ: “I think I'd draw the line at nose rimming, though. Damned schnozzes are always exreting something.”
*snort* Doofus. And, for fucks sake, KZ, you aren't that old.
Ummm, Happy Thanksgiving back?? I'm assuming you are also eating weird dessert combinations of pumpkin and yam and stuff.
I was drunk my first time. And I think I laughed and said it tickled. 😦
Also, BELLY BUTTONS ARE DISGUSTING. I'd rather lick the shower drain.
Ok, maybe not the shower drain…
“I'd rather lick the shower drain.”
I have throw up in my mouth.
I just woke up. such language in the early morning
You tell them, Ingrid!!
I enjoy the smexiness of a good rimming scene from my safe little bubble of assumptions.
YES! That is so what I do! I'm glad I'm not the only one 🙂 And if the author does mention 'earthy musk' I think spicy, which I know is not the same thing 🙂 Oh, and I'm with KB – I also assume no hair! And straight after a shower 🙂
And no, I can't remember the first scene I read…my memory is shocking!
JenB… *scres up face* What is the name of that story please so I never read it?
First rimming scene I read was from an online story and they were in a shower, so it was clean and all. I don't find it particularly hot, but I don't mind it as long as the author doesn't give me too many details. No mention of taste, texture or smell please. Kills the mood for me. 😉
Orannia: You're definitely in good company here, hun. 😉
Merwan: Strictly the receiver POV for you then. Duly noted. LOL.
I can't remember my first – but I have been through so many since..
I rarely read them anymore – I just jump the scenes… the novelty has definately worn off.
The eewww factor has kicked in on the majority of them….
