stephani’s story: your choices

I know some of you have seen this before, but… John Barrowman!

So what did you choose for Stephani Hecht‘s m/m story? Well…

The story prompts:

1. the setting ~ a small town bar which is more than it seems,

2. some background to one of the main protags ~ one of the main characters’ father is a drag queen,

3. another character/s ~ a female gay romance writer who keeps watching and taking notes,

4. a conflict ~ a team bus breaks down in the middle of “bumfuck nowhere” ( <- you have to use that phrase),

5. an object/phrase to be mentioned in the story somewhere ~ a tshirt which says “I support Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and anyone else who plays against Steve Yzerman of the Wings”,

AND, because so many of you had no idea when it came to choice #5, I decided that Stephani needs to include your responses in her story. For eg, Jase said “oh come on! I don’t know who any of these people are!!”

Oh, and she needs to incorporate 4 of these comments.

Well, there were 4 choices to begin with so…

*MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!*

It’s all yours, Stephani!

God, I LOVE this game.

m/m graphic novels appreciation series: yaoi novels

Still not having a whole heap of time to hassle people about their guest posts, but chatting to @FERISHIA gave me an idea for a topic associated with yaoi and this has to do with the genre in its novel form.

vs

Those unfamiliar or new to yaoi may be unaware that it is available in different media: manga/graphic art as well as novel/printed word with illustrations.

I tend to focus on yaoi manga because it is the format I, by far, prefer.

Why?

Well, I do quite like to look at the pictures of the pretties fucking… 😛

In all seriousness, being a long time anime and manga fan, I find the graphic *waggles eyebrows* *must. stop.* form more appealing.

Maybe it’s because I’m more familiar with it? Regardless, it is something I greatly enjoy and I especially like the Japanese culture and society nuances in manga.

Interestingly, I don’t really think you appreciate this insight as much in the written work. I also find that some of the translations of the novels leave a lot to be desired (ie drive me batshit).

That’s me; what about you? Do you dis/like yaoi novels? What is it that appeals or irritates?

I’m also interested to know whether, for those of you who have yet to try yaoi, would you be more likely to read a novel rather than a manga?

stephani hecht is going down

One of Chris, Lily, Tam and mine’s fave reads… for some unknown reason. 😉

Is Stephani Hecht really ready for my awesome choose your own m/m story game?

We’ll see. *MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!*

How to play:

Step 1. Peeps choose different elements to be included in a story.

Step 2. After counting the votes, I let you know the results and…

Step 3. Hand it over to Stephani, who has agreed to write the short story incorporating your choices in about 4 weeks time or less depending on how much of a life she has. 😛

The story prompts:

1. the setting
a) an ice hockey game
b) a snowed-in airport
c) a locked bank vault
d) a small town bar which is more than it seems

2. some background to one of the main protags
a) one of the main characters hates ice hockey – and any kind of sport
b) one of the main characters is BFs with Steve Yzerman
c) one of the main characters has always known that he would fall in love at first sight
d) one of the main characters’ father is a drag queen

3. another character/s
a) a weird arse janitor who keeps turning up
b) a security guard who thinks he is John McClane
c) a cook who looks like Elvis Presley
d) a female gay romance writer who keeps watching and taking notes

4. a conflict
a) a missing blonde wig that once belonged to a famous B-grade movie star
b) a suitcase spills open revealing large sized women’s underwear
c) a team bus breaks down in the middle of “bumfuck nowhere” ( <- you have to use that phrase)
d) one of the main characters has numerous family members who keep ringing his phone at… inopportune times

5. an object/phrase to be mentioned in the story somewhere
a) a tshirt which says “I support Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and anyone else who plays against Steve Yzerman of the Wings”
b) a tshirt which says “I support Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and anyone else who plays against Steve Yzerman of the Wings”
c) a tshirt which says “I support Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks and anyone else who plays against Steve Yzerman of the Wings”
d) a tshirt which says “I support Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes and anyone else who plays against Steve Yzerman of the Wings”

Leave a comment with your choices or email me at krisngoodbooksATgmail.com. You have until midnight Thursday 2 September (Perth, Western Australia time).

Do me proud and make Stephani’s life hell!

m/m graphic novels appreciation series: 2010 highlights

Sorry folks; I am busy, busy at the moment and haven’t been able to hassle people to give me their guest posts for this series.

Possibly a good thing, although, naturally, I’ve still found time to surf for pron.

Priorities. I has ’em. *GRIN*

Anyways, I thought it would be interesting to see what have been some of your favourite yaoi or m/m graphic novel reads – no matter when they were originally published – in 2010.

This is one of mine:

What I said about Shiho Sugiura’s Silver Diamond series on goodreads:

“I picked up this manga series largely on a whim and I am so glad that I did. This contains all of my favourite themes in manga/anime: mystery, evil vs good, fantasy, magical powers, other worlds, a main character with purity and innocence who impacts the world around them, and the possibility of boy love. Awesomesauce.”

I would thoroughly recommend Silver Diamond to anyone intrigued by these themes and who prefer non-explicit manga.

But that’s me… What have you really liked this year?

kris has an epiphany *and it hurt!*

This might seem like sacrilege to some, okay, most, but I can’t stand the True Blood TV series. It makes me want to go seriously McStabbity.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against adaptations from books to films per se.

It’s just, for me, True Blood is a COLOSSAL FUCKING FAIL!

*ahem*

So much so that I didn’t realise until very recently it’s actually put me off reading any more of the Sookie Stackhouse series.

Yeah.

The hype has killed my enjoyment dead.

Yet another reason why the series sucks big fat hairy donkeys balls.

maybe it’s me, but…

Is everyone completely obsessed with that Ghost Hunters TV program or what?

I don’t know about you, but there seems to be a lot of ghost stories, especially those featuring dead lovers, in m/m romance at the moment.

Me? I’m not a fan of the idea of ectoplasmic cum.

Makes me think of Slimer.

*visual*

Ick.
