a reader’s squees

It was in late 2007 when I first discovered ebooks and in late 2008 that I first started lurking, then commenting, before pulling out of my arse creating my own blog.

I’ve come to really appreciate it when an author takes the time and effort to promote their work and respond to their readers. A number have spoken honestly and openly about the benefits and pitfalls of doing this.

I think there is a tendency amongst readers to be embarrassed about being perceived to be too fangirly – or boyly as the case may be. So perhaps we readers are not as open/ public/ whatever about how we feel every time an author responds to a comment or visits our blog. I’m one of those who have been lucky enough to have a few authors drop in – and sometimes play 😉 – here.

My pal Jenre has written a couple of great posts giving a reader’s perspective about authors and publishers who go that extra mile and I thought I’d share my view with you all… albeit not as eloquently. 🙂

Question: What makes Kris squee?

Answer: When an author personalises a message to me/a reader.

The Evidence: Two of my prized possessions.

I was in uni when I found it Terry Pratchett was coming to Perth (fyi – NOone comes to this back of the woods very often) and dragged my Mumma with me to his book signing. I was so in awe she had to speak to him for me. LOL. I got the above though and this helped make up for any mortification I felt. *g*

A couple of weeks ago, I was the giddy recipient of the following I’d won during Ana’s and Thea’s Smugglivus festivities:

Pretty friggin’ cool, hey.

Now lookee what I got in today’s mail!

See. He does so still like me. *GRIN*

Authors, we might not always say it, but have no doubts that whenever a reader gets something like this or even a simple acknowledgment to a comment this is what they are secretly doing:

BTW, if someone DARES use MY author squees for the purposes of evil, I will hunt them down and squish them like the bugs they are.

Just saying. 🙂

the m/m story: your choices

The results are in. This is what you wanted in your m/m story…

1. the name of one of the main characters
It was a tie! Orville and Ulrich. This, of course, means Sean now has the names for BOTH main characters. MWAHAHAHA!

Source: BeautifulMag

2. a description associated with one of the main characters
A thick mat of hair. Jen will be very pleased. 🙂

Source: Kevin McDermott

3. a secondary character who features prominently
A drag queen. You all are so mean. Hehehe.

Source: Adelaide Now

4. a conflict
A tattoo with the name of a former boyfriend was the winner by far.

Source: MenClick

5. a phrase/object/etc that needs to be mentioned in the story… somewhere
Olive oil. Sorry Tam. No were-kanga this time round, but just think of the, umm, applications for olive oil. Anyone for Turkish Oil Wrestling?? O_O

Source: Fit Sports Men

6. the setting
A road trip. A drag queen on a road trip?? I’m thinking Priscilla Queen of the Desert, but only the Gods – and Sean! – know how Orville and Ulrich will fit in to that kind of a story. 😉

Sean dearest, it’s all yours! Let the countdown to Thursday 23 April begin!

a choose your own m/m story

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it!

Here’s how it works:

Step 1. Virtual folk choose different elements (see below) to be included in a story.

Step 2. After counting the votes, I let you know the results and…

Step 3. Hand over the lot to an m/m author I conned railroaded stalked until they said yes who has kindly agreed to participate in the fun and games. This author has 2 weeks to write a short story incorporating your choices and this will then be posted on the blog.

You’re all thinking no author would agree to do something ridiculous like this. You underestimate my ability to suck up blatant bribery powers of persuasion, my partially invisible friends.

Guess who’s coming to play with us:

Buy it now! It’s bloody good. See here for why.

My fellow Aussie Sean Kennedy come on down!

It’s true I may have caught Sean at an opportune time (ie he was dying from the flu and was too full of snot to realise what he’d agreed to do), so I promised as he was the guinea pig for this adventure we would go easy on him. Sucker!

The choices:

1. the name of one of the main characters
a) Orville
b) Sheldon
c) Bob
e) Ulrich

2. a description associated with one of the main characters
a) framed his bulging package
b) fluffy love trail
c) sweaty manly scent
d) a thick mat of hair

3. a secondary character who features prominently
a) a cat
b) a talking parrot
c) a drag queen
d) a boss

4. a conflict
a) one of the main characters has a secret identity
b) a psycho chick stalker
c) memory loss
d) tattoo with the name of a former boyfriend

5. a phrase/object/etc that needs to be mentioned in the story… somewhere
a) were-kanga
b) ‘one ring to rule them all’
c) supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
d) olive oil

6. the setting
a) a space station
b) a bar
c) a road trip
d) an airport

Leave a comment with your choices or email me at krisngoodbooksATgmail.com. You have until 5pm Wednesday 8 April (Perth Western Australia time).

Don’t be scared now. Come play with Sean and me!

i’m back in the saddle again

It is true. RL and the EDJ have been killing me this last month or so and I’ve resorted to much silliness (egged on by a certain redhead) in an effort to, well, ignore everything, including reading – 😦 – and reviewing for Wave. (Whoops! I’ve a feeling I will be uninvited soon. I’m such a slacker. *sigh*)

Never fear though; I returned to the tbr last weekend and read 6 books, which meant, of course, I could replenish the pile during the week. 🙂 I had me an m/m feast last night. *GRIN*

I thought to myself this morning “why not share my bounty??” So this is them and my thoughts tastings smellings (you know, the hand wafting thing over the stove that chefs do to see how things are cooking):

Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum. I smell The White Knight by Josh Lanyon. Hehehe.

What wafted my way: Auto buy for those who love JL. It is a prequel AND a sequel to The Dark Horse. JL was able to achieve flash backs and present day story through the use of tenses, which I thought worked very well. I admit I preferred The Dark Horse because it was primarily suspense; however, I did like how Sean seemed to come into his own in The White Knight.

A Fostered Love by Cameron Dane

What wafted my way: I do enjoy CD, but was not 100% convinced with this one. Although I didn’t not like it, I think I would have opted for it to focus on Jonah’s and Christian’s relationship to the extent of all else. The character of Jonah was the shining light in this book. He was lovely to read.

Cattle Valley: Gone Surfin’ by Carol Lynne

What wafted my way: I’ve had this one for a while and finally got round to reading it… Look. The bottom line is I’ve committed time and money to this series. Enuf said.

Enticing Elliot by Amber Kell

What wafted my way: Denying Dare set up the story for Enticing Elliot with Parker having his own house separate to the rest of the pack and this was set up for BDSM ready for the return of his reincarnated mate. What happened?? Hardly any of this was in this book and something funky is going on with the editing. Will I continue to read this series?? Yep. Three words: Scary. Mutant. Werewolves.

Sursein Judgment by Jet Mykles

What wafted my way: You will have to wait. I’ll be reviewing this one for Wave. Told you I was back in the saddle again. 😉

tasing my keepers: the swithin chronicles

The Swithin Chronicles by Sharon Maria Bidwell

The Blurb of the First Book, Uly’s Comet:

Markis Shavar, the Swithin Prince, controls the power of the Comet. His power may be the only thing that can stop a war between two vast monarchies. A war that could devastate the world. If that weren’t pressure enough, he may also have to rescue a princess and face a marriage of convenience. And it sure as hell doesn’t help that Markis can barely control the power when he calls it forth. Traditional methods – including celibacy, aren’t working and he is running out of time.

His personal guard and best friend, Ryanac, insists that Markis should embrace love, both emotionally and physically, to control the Comet. He’d really like for Markis to embrace him. It’s entirely possibly Ryanac is correct…but if he’s wrong, it could destroy them.

When Markis leaves the palace one night to indulge in the luxury of a little solitude, he captures Uly, a would-be thief. Out of boredom, he decides to play a little game with the street rat, but Uly has other ideas. He plans to teach the prince a lesson in desire … and love.

If a street thief can teach a prince to gain control by losing it, love may truly conquer all.

Why I bought it:

It was last year some time and a gazillion books ago. Having said that, I think one of the reasons it interested me was because it was fantasy which is one of my fave genres.

Dislike/like (ending on a high note):

Dislike~ The first book has m/f and m/f/m/m in it. There are only a few scenes and they are relevant to the plot. Stick with it as the other books in the series focus on the developing m/m/m relationship between Markis, Ryanac and Uly, with any m/f action generally happening off page.

Like~ Re-reading the blurb makes the story sound a little, well, cheesy, which I can assure you it’s not – and it’s not Eliza Doolittle-ish either. I think Uly is a very engaging character with whom the reader falls more in like/love as the story and the series progresses. He is both innocent and worldly, shy yet affectionate and passionate, uneducated but intelligent. A wonderful protag.

Dislike~ I did get pissed off at Markis, especially in the second book, because he wasn’t open with Uly at times – very protective and treats him like a child which was frustrating all round – and didn’t seem totally honest about his relationship with Ryanac. The way the m/m/m developed was convincing however, and not all rainbows and fairy dust as some authors would have ménages to be.

Like~ Magic, power, political intrigue, danger, romance, and a prince, a pauper and a knight. What the heck else do you want in a fantasy?? Possibly only excellent world building, terrific writing and great character development?? Look no further. It’s all here! *g*

So, what I think:

A very good m/m/m fantasy series. It’s one of my keepers.

====================================================
‘Tasting’ is my version of a mini-review where I talk a (very) little about what I liked and disliked about a book as well as who I think the story will appeal to. Oh, and I’ve added a bit about why I picked up the book in the first place – sometimes this can be interesting to know.

a were what?!

She stepped out of the tub and went to the bathroom mirror. She raised her lip and carefully examined her face.
“What are you doing?” Zach seemed almost afraid to ask.
“Seeing what my scary wolf face looks like.”
Putting his palms against his eyes, he sighed—deeply. A cleansing sigh really. Somehow Sara knew that with
a little effort she could make him do that all the time.
“You can’t stay here,” Zach suddenly announced.
“Why?”
“They’re after you. Remember the guy who attacked you today in the shop?”
“It was more like a kiss.” She heard Zach growl but kept her face completely neutral. Fuck him.
“Whatever. But he’s one of several. Like the guys at the club that first night I was here. He’s Pride.”
“You mean proud.”
There was that sigh again. “I mean he’s Pride.” That stated through gritted teeth.
“Pride? Lions have prides.”
“Yup.”
Sara spun around. “There are lions, too?”
Patient Zach made an entrance. “Yes. And tigers. And mountain lions. There’s an array of shifters.”
“Bunnies?”
Sara watched him swallow. “No bunnies,” he bit out. Much more and he’d grind his teeth into dust. “Think predators. Our ancestors became one with the predators. Bunnies are low on the food chain.”
“Sharks?”
What?”
“Don’t get huffy.
They’re the ultimate killing machine.”
Shelly Laurenston’s Pack Challenge

Tracy, my Californian pal, and I have been having some very deep and meaningful conversations lately (we have so!) and one of her recent comments rang a bell with me. Granted she was being a bit facetious when she wrote “he doesn’t scream were-anything to me”.

“Were-anything??” Thoughteth I.

“A were-anything??”

Angels sung, sunbeams landed on my house, and a lightbulb flashed over my head.

“A Were ANYTHING!”

This (of course) led me to think about the were-characters readers don’t see but are absolutely desperate to get in books.

In turn, I decided to share with the partially invisibles the were I really, really, really want to read about in a paranormal:

Now, don’t be sceptical! They may look furry and cuddly, yet they are lethal. Do you think Aussies just made up the whole boxing thing?? Not so, all ye of little virtual faith. Look at this:

And then at these:

You can see it now, can’t you?

THE WERE-KANGAROO!

You know you want it too!

What other were-anything would you like to see in a book?? Don’t be shy now. I shared my fantasy so ante up. *g*
