ratings: the who’s who

And…

finally…

maybe…

😛

I’m curious to know who your ‘go to’ reviewer/rater is if you happen to be umming and arring about purchasing a book?

Is there an individual or site or whatever you always check out whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the new releases and, for the love of The Book Goddess, want a – just the one, goddammit – decent recommendation?!

Or maybe you’re a lemming to this particular person’s cliff??

I’m not wanting to start a popularity contest here by any means, rather I’m hoping this might be a useful sharing exercise for readers hoping for such info, especially regarding reviewers associated with the m/m romance genre.

I’ll start, shall I?  ðŸ˜€

My two, good old standbys are Kassa and Jenre.

I guess it goes without saying that both are much nicer than I am.  In spite of this 😛 , I find Kassa’s responses to different themes, etc tend to be pretty similar to my own and Jen’s thoroughness answers any questions I may have about whether a book is for me or not.

Most importantly, though, I trust them for their honesty.  I know they won’t fuck me over as a reader in order to placate someone else.  That’s the bottom line as far as I’m concerned.

But that’s me.  Who are your fave reviewers and why?

ratings and the picky reader

In the interests of continuing to throughly thrash the topic of ratings – oh, yes, it’s possible – I wanted to follow up on the comment a number of people made about their average goodreads ratings tending to be high because they are very selective about the books they buy.

Hey!  I rhymed.  I luv these drugs.

This made me wonder about how carefully readers generally choose their books, particularly when it comes to ratings.

So, are you purely a 4 or 5 stars buyer?  Or do you occasionally slip in a 3 or *gasp* a 2 for curiousity’s sake?  Do tell.  ðŸ™‚

maybe it’s me, but…

Do you ever realise – God alone only knows how long after the fact – that you’ve been unfollowed and wonder what you’ve done to piss someone – assuming you even knew who it was in the first place – off?

This time??

Then you think “well, I’ve done quite a lot of things recently” and have no idea which one it could actually be.

Eventually… because you’re such a spring chicken… at heart, it hits you that high school was a long fucking time ago and you didn’t give a shit what people thought of you then so why is this bothering you now.

Which is when you come to understand the whole social media thing is a vast conspiracy by the PTB, who are trying to make everyone believe the only way to survive in this world is via a popularity contest of who has the most friends/followers/whatevers.

And that makes you remember why you decided not to follow people back in the first place because it was all too hard and doing your head in.

Yeah.

I didn’t think it was only me.

ratings and the moody reader

Yes, I have more to say ask about ratings.

Yes, my ability to thrash a topic to death knows no bounds.

Yes, it is Teh Awesome and not anything to do with laziness.

Yes, I’m reasonably sure about that.

Moving on…

The question:

Once you’ve rated a book, do you ever go back and change it?

My answer:

I do.

Not always, but often enough to make me wonder if anyone else notices that I change my ratings.

Because the world revolves around me and my opinions.

Obviously.

*hair flick*

Why do I do it?  For two reasons: firstly, it could be I’ve had a day or two to rethink my initial rating; and, secondly, I may have read something similar and had a change of heart about the rating of the earlier book.

Oh, and as a rule, I tend to re-rate lower.

Shocker, I know.  ðŸ˜›

So, are you a moody rater too?

very important poll which could affect the rest of your life

Okay, that may be a wee bit of an exaggeration*.

It got your attention, though, right.

The end.

Anyhoo…

I was having a ‘discussion’** with a friend yesterday about the latest wankfest to come to light in the m/m romance community***.

‘He’**** and I agreed it was absolutely fine and dandy for an author to have a pseud; however, our opinions differed about how many names someone should write under, particularly if it was in the same genre and/or sub-genre.

‘He’ thought more than one was just pretentious and could cast doubt upon an author’s reputation*****.

Whereas I reckon three pseuds seems to be a nice round number.

But what do you think?  Do you agree with my friend******?  Or do you have some other figure in mind?

======

* Okay, a lie.  Let’s put it this way… do you really want to go on my shit list??  Yeah, didn’t think so.  Answer the damned poll.

** The quotation marks mean it was somewhat heated.

*** Like anyone is shocked.  *rolls eyes*

**** You can just never be too sure these days.

***** Actually that wasn’t what ‘he’ said, but let’s be civil, shall we.

****** So there wasn’t any friend.  I bet it made you wonder who I was talking about though.*******

******* Also, I didn’t want anyone to think I was having conversations with myself, especially arguments********.  I’m not that crazy.

******** I won, btw.

random, but bloody important, awesomeness

I’ve already posted this on my tumblr, but wanted to share it here as well.

This is an extremely powerful, not to mention awesome, ad I saw for the first time during the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras last Saturday.

All of us need to stop kidding ourselves this issue is about anything else but equal rights.

Get up, Australia, and join me and others who will be rallying for marriage equality on 19 March

It’s time.

ratings and the swing voters

One of the points raised as a result of my post about ratings was that lament often heard from readers:

“Why, oh why, can’t goodreads have 1/2 stars?!”

If I had a dollar, blah, blah.  Bunch of drama queens.

At the risk of being stoned to death, I like the simplicity of the whole stars.

There have only been a few – a very few – instances at which time I’ve *barely* ummed and arred over a 1/2 star and this was mainly when I was reviewing for Wave.

Even then, a .25 meant the rating went down, a .75 meant it went up, and a .5 saw me having to decide whether it was really worth going up.  Sometimes it was and others, well, not so much.

See.  Simple.

Or lazy.

Whatever.

Anyhoo, are you someone who obsesses over that mythical 1/2 star thing at goodreads?  Or do you, like me, not give a toss and wonder what the hell everyone else is raving about?

The weirdos.

ratings and the suckage threshold

I’m always curious about people’s – readers’ and authors’ – reactions to ratings.

I’ve read some interesting discussions about their value as well as posts about the various systems reviewers and readers use in order to determine them.

At the same time, I’ve also seen responses to ratings which have left me scratching me head, particularly when an author goes into a hissy fit over a 4-4.5 star rating.  That just seems, well, weird arse to me considering the fact this would tend to indicate a pretty bloody good review.

Anyways, after my post the other day about gushing, I decided to posit a question I’ve been wondering about; that is, when you rate a book on a 1-5 scale what is your level/threshold for indicating whether it sucked or not.

In my case, I’ve always been accused, for wont of a better word, of being a hard rater so I decided to take a closer look at my goodreads bookshelves to see how nasty I really am.  ðŸ˜‰

I have 2231 books which I’ve ranked at goodreads and my average rating is 3.03.

This actually surprised me – apparently I believe my own press 😛 – so I decided to drill down into the detail.  This was the result:

rating frequency % #
5
2% 58
4
24% 542
3
47% 1067
2
24% 540
1
1% 24

Besides obviously liking the number 3, what interested me was that my 2 and 4 ratings were essentially the same.  For the purposes of this post, though, let’s focus on the 2s.

At goodreads, a reader gives a book 2 stars when they think ‘it was ok’.

This explanation says it all because, while I probably won’t look at it again, the book was a relatively pleasant distraction for how ever long it took me to read it.

Sure it may not have blown me away or anything, and I could have easily gone straight on to the next story without giving it much of a second thought, but it really, truly was okay.

I am also likely to recommend it to people to whom I think the writing, the sub/genre, the themes or the characters etc are likely to appeal.

For me, therefore, the threshold for suckage is between 1 and 2 stars, with 1 star being something I didn’t like for whatever reason/s.

However, I have the feeling that my threshold differs from other readers and certainly from what some authors may think.

So how about it?  What’s your suckage level?

encounters with my baby brother: 12

Me: So I was in the mood for car chase movies last night and I rewatched a couple of faves.

The Baby Brother:  Which ones?

Me:  Death Race

The BB:  *rolls eyes*

Me:  What?!  I love that movie.  It fucking rocks.

The BB:  You like it because it has that guy in it.  That Jason Statham.

Me:  Well, he’s great in i-…

The BB:  He’s great in that pull up scene is what you mean.

Me: Damned straight.

My BB knows me so well.  *GRIN*

PS – I may have blown-up that pic a bit to allow for maximum effect.

PSS – You’re welcome.

random awesomeness

Yesterday Kassa tweeted the link to this post by an American mumma.

I thought it was so unbelievably awesome that I knew I had to share it with you all here.

I encourage you to take the time to read this piece about bullying and the trickle-down effect of cruelty as well as the letter to her son which appears at the end.

There is no doubt in my mind that you will be as moved as I was.
