tasting ‘helpless’ – day notevencloseto6

The Blurb:

In London during the gross indecency trial of Oscar Wilde, Douglas Shrove finds himself still haunted by memories of his dead lover while skirting violence, blackmail and the affections of two men.

There are two who seek you out.

That is what the gypsy told Douglas Shrove a few months after the death of his lover. And the gypsy was right. Two men were vying for his affections.

Mark Goldcrest: an aristocrat like himself; a golden Adonis, cool and discreet.

Warren Scott: a shabbily-dressed denizen of a Bohemian world that Douglas can’t begin to understand.

One is what he seems, and one is not, and one is dangerous.

But which is which? Both men are attractive and attracted to him…but only one has a dangerous secret.

One is what he seems, and one is not, and one is dangerous.

One of Douglas Shrove’s admirers could be his salvation—if the other doesn’t destroy him first.

Why I bought it: I won this during the M/M Romance goodreads group’s anniversary celebrations.

Dislike/like (ending on a high note):

Dislike~ Most of my mates know how I feel about historical fiction.  My rabid avoidance comes from a deep, abiding hatred for authors who don’t thoroughly research the period in which they are setting the story.  One of the perils of my working in the history field unfortunately.  I therefore can’t help but begin reading an historical romance expecting the worst… (cont. below)

Like~ However, and I know this may come across as patronising, I was pleasantly surprised by Helpless.  The author did an excellent job at portraying the time period, complete with the historical and social context of Oscar Wilde’s trial.  This added a depth and richness to the story which made it more than just a chicks-with-dicks version of a regency romance.  It made it a convincing and at times heartbreaking look at what life was like for so-called deviants.

Dislike~ More of a warning~ Douglas, the main character, drove me batshit.  He seemed so insipid in parts I kept expecting him to have an attack of the vapours and take to bed.  Yet, as the plot progresses and Douglas’ character develops, I realised the author had emphasised this to show his increasing independence, his growth from being ‘helpless’.  Clever, yes?

Like~ As I sit here typing this, I have come to the conclusion that what I liked the most about this were the contrasts in it.  Things were not always what they seemed and, while some characters and situations may be a little trope-y, the twists the author has managed to work into the plot and subplots as well as the historical context give it a freshness which makes for a very good read.

So, what I think: If you are interested in an m/m historical romance with a strong dash of crime/thriller, I would recommend Helpless to you.  I enjoyed it very much.

‘Tasting’ is my version of a mini-review where I talk a (very) little about what I liked and disliked about a book as well as who I think the story will appeal to. Oh, and I’ve added a bit about why I picked up the book in the first place – sometimes this can be interesting to know.

your xmas m/m story by tam!

Perhaps some of you remember these choices?

A toy *waggles eyebrows* workshop; one of them is completely oblivious to attempts to get him under the mistletoe;

a weekend motorcycle club whose bikes are all named after Santa’s reindeer;

*deep breath*

finally engaged to the so-called woman of his dreams, one of the main protags finds himself left holding the baby after he discovers he was drugged and seduced by a former colleague at last year’s Christmas office party *gasp* who was determined to have a child before her biological clock ran out but tragically died only months later leaving her gorgeous younger, gay brother and the main protag as joint guardians of the child… as long as they live together… *panting*; AND,

the last line of the story has to be ‘And that’s how you put the ‘ho’ in ‘ho, ho, ho”, which was brought to you by L B Gregg.

And look at what Tam has given us for Krismas!

Our very own Secret Baby GFY!

Awww, she so loves us… especially now that it’s ended.  *GRIN*

when things resonate

“And in the meantime, enjoy every version of yourself you ever meet, because not everybody who discovers their true identity likes what they find.”

I read the above quote in The Book Smugglers’ review of Antony John’s YA novel Five Flavors of Dumb and instantly knew I would be reading this book.

You see, and I’m sure I’ve said this before, but I firmly believe one of the hardest things we will ever do in life is to accept ourselves for who we are…. warts and all.

That doesn’t mean trying to define ourselves by how others see us or by what we’re not in comparison to those around us.

Instead, it’s about trying to understand yourself.  To learn what makes you, well, you.

It’s difficult and challenging, but, in the end, all the more empowering.

Because, as easy as it is to accept the things you think are great about yourself, it’s harder and therefore the more rewarding to acknowledge what you don’t like.

For me, I know that for all I am Teh Awesome ;), I am also a moody, controlling, opinionated, impatient bitch, who tends to wallow in her depression and chronic illness.

There’s no question I dislike, even despise, these aspects of myself at times.

They’re a part of me, though.

Yes, parts I struggle with, sometimes complete with lion(ess)-taming paraphernalia in hand.

Yes, parts at my darkest moments I wish I weren’t.

Yes, parts I even want to change.

But would I really if I got the chance?

No.  I wouldn’t.

As sure as I am that I’ll never, EVER be someone who looks in the mirror and tells themselves ‘I love you’, blah, blah, I know I’m actually pretty okay.

I like me.

Even more, I like the journey I’ve had and am still undertaking to get to this person.  This Kris.

I guess where I’m going with this is, at this time of dreaded holiday season overwhelmingness, try not to be afraid of who you are.

Take courage and accept those things about you which make you special, make you ‘different’.  No matter how bad they might seem right now.

Besides, perfection??

Fucking boring as bat shit.

kurious kris

Not scary.  I swearz.

I’m just curious to find out what readers believe constitutes a ‘closed door’ approach to writing sex scenes in romance.

For example, does it mean that everything *waggles eyebrows* happens off page?

Or are you a reader who defines sex as being the actual intercourse bit?  Meaning that anything from BJs to frottage can happen in text, but no boy bits better be going anywhere near any holes *points down* cos that’s behind closed door stuff.

I’ll be interested to see what you all think.

things that make you go O_o

Have you every wondered why a chubby person is considered to be a bad thing, yet a chubby cock is good, great even, in m/m?

maybe it’s me, but… (part two)

In yesterday’s post about sappy endings a couple of people mentioned the believability associated with an HEA ‘coming out’ scene and its time frame.

As I was responding to the comments, I kept wondering about which HEA I would think was more ‘real’; one at five pages or one five hours into the relationship.

My answer: Actually, I could believe both.

You see, no matter how many times I take the piss (translation from Oz: make fun of) romantic tropes I am a reader who is pretty willing to be convinced by anything an author wants to dream up.

For example, if an author established a background story about a character in which he was on the cusp of telling everyone he was gay and just needed the impetus – in this case, stumbling across the man of his dreams – to do so why couldn’t there be a mushy, coming out scene five hours after the destined meet?

A skilled writer could pull that off, don’t you think? Or is it still too ridiculous a notion for some of you to even contemplate?
