I wasn’t able to find a blurb as such about the Pride High series, but I did find the below in a 28/9/2006 press release:
Pride High is a queer-themed independent comic book about five friends and the gay-straight alliance they create at their high school for superpowered youth. A celebration of queer and queer-friendly teens, Pride High will explore racism in the LGBT community, homophobia in communities of color, and the place of young queer superheroes in a world that prefers heroes a little older and a lot straighter.
“Pride High is dedicated to all the queer and queer-friendly kids out there who have formed gay-straight alliances. They’re my heroes,” says Tommy Roddy, Executive Director of Pride Comics.
Pride High is published by Pride Comics, an independent comic book imprint formed in May 2006 by writer Tommy Roddy, artist Brian Ponce, editor Carl Hippensteel, and Dutch translator Andrew Van Marle. In addition to English and Dutch, Pride High will also be available in Japanese and French.
Why I bought it:
After a couple of people mentioning it, including the fact that fantabulous artist Anne Cain was doing an issue, I got intrigued enough to want to give it a read. This is when an amazing, awesome island kitteh stepped it to get it for me because Pay Pal sucks big fat hairy donkey ballz and I have a hate/hate relationship.
Dislike/like (ending on a high note):
Dislike~ True story: I’m an impatient bitch. I hate waiting. Hate. It. At approx. 30 pages an issue, I champ at the bit for the next edition in the series. It’s not good. 😦
Like~ It may *cough* be a tad obvious *cough* however, I kind of have a thing for this medium. GIMME! GIMME NOW! *ahem* With Pride High, I particularly enjoyed the way each issue was drawn by a different artist. The artwork of some appealed to me more than others. Still, it was interesting to see how each person interpreted the characters, the story line and the world, yet maintained the connection from one edition to the next. Very cool.
Dislike~ I hesitate to say this because it may bring back snarly, ranty kitteh memories, but the digital files were absofuckinglutely ginormous and a bit of a nightmare to download. Make sure you have super duper internet capacity and time to spare if you’re going to buy the pdfs instead of going the print-on-demand route.
Like~ To be honest, it took me a little while to warm up to Pride High. However, as the story developed I definitely got more and more caught up in the lives of the main characters as well as the mystery subplot. I’m hoping the latter will be emphasised in the issues to come.
So, what I think: I found myself increasingly enjoying Pride High as the series progressed and am looking forward to finding a good minion brave enough to buy the latest editions for me. *hint, hint*
If you want to have a squiz for yourself, the first couple of issues are available as a webcomic here.

‘Tasting’ is my version of a mini-review where I talk a (very) little about what I liked and disliked about a book as well as who I think the story will appeal to. Oh, and I’ve added a bit about why I picked up the book in the first place – sometimes this can be interesting to know.
Ok People…
This is going to be short and sweet, I have even added links, so you can go explore and enjoy.
While I have been reading manga, anime, comic and other graphic books for a long time only few have ever actually reach my keeper shelf list.
I started off with comics as most people do so I had my years with the Archie comics and from there I moved on to the DC set of heroes and heroine. Personally I have always been attracted to the baddies and over the years I have enjoyed the antics of Veronica, Poison Ivy, The Joker and other such dastardly people.
When I found Yaoi I developed a different kind of love for this type of reading material. Firstly there is the graphic which can range from sketch art to solid shape or more flourish styles and I am fascinated by it all and sometimes go out of my way to find the more elaborate style offerings like Crimson Spell.
If you have never read yaoi before the writers and illustrators have gotten the sexual tension present in each books down to a fine art. There are loads of yaoi books that I don’t particularly care for, whether because of the plot or weak characters but most have a few scenes that normally leave me with a smutty little grin on my face and it’s all down to the sexual tension.
The mandate that I was given by Kris was to list my sort of top 5-10 manga, anime, comic with no specific to genre. As this is a m/m site I will mention just a few that are definitely a firm favourite of mine.
Twi-harders who are into the yaoi scene – you will love this one.. The plot is not so much about sex but the small and sometime unsteady steps that make up a new relationship. I had great fun reading this one.
6…Only the Ringer knows – Kannagi Satoru
I adore this series, it’s one of those series that follow the main protags through not only physical but emotional development over a period of time and I have collected all the books over the years…
Some rather intense characters are in this one.
Matsuno Kaoru works for a department store that sells very elegant men’s clothing. At this department store, there is a mannequin named Mister Veirne that brings about good business to the store. Strangely enough, Kaoru begins to notice how life-like Mister Veirne really is…
Just read it, even on re-read it’s still bloody good.
4… Crimson Spell
Already featured in the series here. A fantasy based yaoi that has a little but of everything to satisfy even the most scrupulous of fantasy connoisseur.
3… Junjou Romantica
Already featured in the series here. Be prepared to sink into this series and it wont let you go that easily.
I found this book when I was into a whole lot of spec fiction, the story is set in a futuristic society and the draw of the book for me was the beautifully drawn characters and the structure of the world. There is romance, angsty moments, backstabbing unrequited lust and loadsssss of sexual tension – and this was all nicely wrapped up in a world that I loved and was not afraid or ashamed to submerge myself into.
A must read.

Well, I know what I will be reading next based on EH’s recommendations. What about you?
