kris’ good reads expedition: diary entry 6

At this stage, all I’ve done with my Good Reads shelves is divide them up into read and to-reads.

Because it’s my page and I can do whatever the hell I want and I think genre shelves are for pussies too scared about the books they might end up with which has nothing to do with my being a slack arse whatsoever , the only other shelf that I’m going to add is a ‘recommended reads’.

What do you reckon? What have some of you done?

kris’ good reads expedition: diary entry 5

Stealing Adding books to my Good Reads thing from the lists that other people have created appeals to my inherent laziness.

To this end, I’ve decided to continue appropriating from others and not actually add anything myself. I figure that they’ll turn up eventually anyway.

After jokingly *not really* threatening to stake that R girl yesterday, it suddenly occurred to me…

… with the timezones and everything, how can I be really sure that some of you aren’t vampires??

Nothing says ‘let’s be Good Reads friends’ quite like sending links to gay porn in an attempt at blatant bribery. *God love redheaded-Cali-butt&book-girls.*

Other than that can someone please explain to me if there is any sort of etiquette involved in friending people at Good Reads or any other site cos I live in rabid fear of offending someone.

kris’ good reads expedition: diary entry 2

As I roamed the Land of Good Reads randomly adding books to my page from other people’s lists, it suddenly occurred to me…

… should these shelves relflect the books I own now or should they include books I’ve read and, better yet, have actually remembered what I thought of ’em?

If it’s meant to be the former I have some serious editting to do.

If anyone with with a first name beginning with R ever tells you that Good Reads is something that you can do pretty easily (for eg add 300 books in 30 mins) do NOT believe them because it’s a BIG, FAT LIE!

*ahem*

My advice. Back slowly away, smile to placate them, then turn around and run like hell!

Note: I have now updated this post title to better reflect my experiences as an intrepid explorer boldly going where no sane reader has gone before.

sometimes it can be the simpliest of things

A number of others far cleverer than I have posted on the subject of writing books for or based on a specific ethnic or cultural community as well as the differences in language and idioms.

What struck me the other day was that it can be the teeny tiniest of these things, which can make me as a reader – and as much as I’m used to reading stories with settings other than Australia – stop in my tracks and scratch my head.

For me, it was recently a US book that used the phrase ‘a check mark’.

After I’d got over my “what the hell…??” and realised the author was referring to making a tick mark, it made me wonder how many other readers have hesitated at such relatively simple things.

Have any of you had similar experiences? Or is it the bigger differences such as a sport or even a food, which have confused the heck out of you?

maybe it’s me, but…

… if you saw this cover wouldn’t you think this was a story about conjoined twins finding love?

Needless to say I was pretty disappointed.

fuck it fridays

Hi all

I’ve prob’ly confused the heck out of your Google Readers, RSSes or whatevers cos I just deleted the post I had up to do this instead.

I don’t know about you, but I’m having a helluva time of it at the moment and am suffering from a serious case of the ‘blehs’.

Maybe it’s a mid year thing. Maybe it’s because I’m not sleeping. Maybe it’s because people suck. Who the hell knows.

What I do know is that when I was writing all this ‘woe is me’ stuff to one of my bestest pals, Tam, I suddenly thought ‘you know what… fuck it!’

Fuck this having to suck it up and shit. Fuck this playing nice with all the other peeps in RL because you have to.

I WANT to rant – and if I want to do it I’m sure there’s prob’ly others out there who feel exactly the same way.

So I’ve decided to instigate ‘Fuck It Fridays’ where anyone can rant and rave about whatever has pissed them off this week.

It might be big or small. It might be something you’ve read (this is meant to be a reader’s blog after all) or seen. Hell, it might even be about me. The only thing I ask is that you don’t get personal and too wankfestery cos that would seriously suck.

Is this self-indulgent you ask?? Yes definitely, but, well, fuck it!

maybe it’s still me, but…

… I’m interested in continuing yesterday’s topic and throwing a couple of things out there to see what you all think.

Am I imagining things or is it the same two from yesterday??

Tam and Jen both raised an interesting point about when the same model (or, I guess, someone who is easily recognisable) is used on multiple book covers. They said this can make them hesitate because they have already associated this image with the character from another book.

This made me sit up because I have a similar issue (see this post from my earlier – and obviously very popular – days) when it comes to a model appearing on covers for both m/f AND m/m books. My immediate response when I see this is usually along the lines of ‘but he’s gay!’

So, in addition to getting further comments re: the above, I wanted to ask you this:

Considering book covers, especially in the epublishing world, are usually the hook to suck in the punters/readers do you think it more likely that you would purchase a book which used the same image or model if you loved the first book (ie riding their coat-tails *you know who I’m talking about ;)*)? Or, on the opposite side of the coin, if you hated the story would you shudder, think ‘no fucking way’ and move on?
