kris’ top 5…

… reasons for being a Book Slut. In no particular order.

1. Because.

2. Reading engages the few muscles that I actually want to exercise.

3. It’s good to live vicariously through other people’s fantasies.

4. It’s either that or become a serial killer.

5. When the Zombie Apocalypse comes none of us will have time for reading so best to get as much done now.

What about you? What’s your top 5 excuses reasons for being a Book Slut?

things that make you go O_o

Let me ask you this…

Is a guy doing his best agonized, Wicked Witch of the West interpretation really going to tempt you to buy a book??

Unless, that is, you’re into sadism or have an evil witch fetish.

Which is cool, btw. No judgements here.
.
.
.
Ummm.

Shutting up now.

the m/m meme & me

How the frack was I meant to know that you had to answer the bloody questions yourself first?! I don’t think that’s particularly fair when the whole point of doing this is to annoy the shit out of other people. *pouts*

So you’re getting it again and don’t be bitching about it, alright!!

Go here for the rules, blah, blah.

Questions:

1. How long have you been reading GLBTQ fiction? Nearly 2 years.

2. What was the first book you read in this genre? Can’t honestly remember, but J L Langley’s Without Reservations was among the first.

3. Are you ‘out’ as a reader? To my family and virtuals, yep. Actually one of my closest friends was around yesterday and saw Sean’s magnets on my fridge. Seeing her confusion, I explained it was for a gay romance. Not sure how she took that. LOL.

4. Ebooks, print or both? Both.

5. Do you buy direct from publishers or from secondary sellers? Usually sellers.

6. Prove you’re a Book Slut. How many books would you say you buy a week? A lot. I’m too scared to even count how many I’ve bought and/or ordered this week.

7. Are you a cover, blurb or excerpt buyer? All three!

8. Yeah, you read reviews, but do you actually take notice of them? Sometimes. What bothers others may not me so I tend to take them with a pinch of salt.

9. Who’s your fave publisher? In terms of consistency and quality I’d have to say at the moment it’s Blind Eye Books.

10. What about authors? Your top two only!! Hmmm, this is actually harder than I thought it would be because some of my auto buys have been supremely disappointing of late. M L Rhodes without a doubt. The second?? Whatever author team that includes Madeleine Urban. *hehehe*

11. Is there a sub-genre you particularly dis/like? I avoid historicals like the plague.

12. Short or long?? *rolls eyes* And, no, I’m not talking about cocks. Long!

13. Anything turn you off about m/m or is all just glorious smut to you? Water sports and scat play. Just ewww.

14. Finish this sentence. You know it’s m/m twu wuv when… you’ve always been a top/bottom but you’re willing to switch for him foreva and eva.

15. What trope or theme are you heartily sick of in m/m romance? That BDSM will cure all your physical and/or psychological problems.

16. If you could choose any 3 characters for a m/m/m who would they be? Buggered if I know. Hell, I just came up with the bloody questions, not the friggin’ answers.

17. What new GLBTQ release are you most hanging out for right now? Fires of Ballian by M L Rhodes.

18. What GLBTQ book has completely blown you away this year? Hero by Perry Moore.

19. What do you think we’ll see more of in m/m romance in 2010? Definitely steampunk.

20. Don’t you agree that author Josh Lanyon should kill off arsehole character Jake Riordan? Fuck YES!!! Kill him. KILL. HIM. DEAD.

Tag; your it: Been there, can’t be arsed pissing off anyone else… today yet. 😉

Cookies! Here’s a fave piccie of mine:

*sigh* Sooo good.

m/m meme

I was bored shitless the other day and trying to work out what I could do when it suddenly hit me…

I could try my hand at this meme thing and see how many people I can suck into my world of procrastination!

I know. Awesome, right. *beams*

So, there need to be rules don’t there… err… ummm… okay!

Rules:

1. Answer all the questions below in either the comments here or post it on your own site. If you post it on your own site you have to come back and give the link here so I/Kris can mosey on over and see if you answered correctly have a sticky beak.

2. You have to tag two other people once your done and pester them relentlessly until they do the meme too.

3. Instead of a meme image thing you have to post a cookie, preferably a twofer. It is an m/m meme after all. 😉

*rubs hands together in glee*

on behalf of the book buyers of oz

Ages ago I posted about a debate that was happening in Oz on the issue of the parallel importation of books.

Basically this is legislation that gives an Australian-based publisher 30 days to print an Oz version (hence the different book covers thing) of any book released in the world. If a bookstore later wishes to sell the book they can’t import it from an overseas publisher, but can only purchase it from that publisher.

This protectionist and anti-competition policy (just a hint as to what my POV is) was subject to much criticism in an analysis by our Productivity Commission and, in a nutshell, it recommended the Federal Government reverse the restrictions.

Did the Oz parliamentarians choose to follow the advice of their own friggin’ agency??

Hell no. Instead they have decided to protect the few over the majority.

So, on behalf of the book buyers of Oz, I say thank you very fucking much, Oz parliamentarians!

Thank you for guaranteeing we readers not only continue to pay outrageous book prices, but for giving tacit approval to likely increases through your support of a monopoly market.

Thumbs up to you!

You arseholes rock!

oh, brother!

Okay, probably inappropriate in the context of this discussion, but that’s what makes it so fucking funny.

When I was growing up I always wanted an older brother.

It wasn’t because I didn’t want to be the oldest child (which I didn’t but that’s another story) or that I wanted someone to look out for me (which I ended up with anyway cos the Bearded Baby Brother is scary when he thinks people are being mean to the Mumma and me).

It was because of one thing and one thing only…

Insta-Boyfriends!

Oh, c’mon. You all must of read Sweet Dreams, Sweet Valley Highs and Mills and Boons when you were growing up. It was like a golden rule:

Girl has older brother.
Brother has Friend.
Girl crushes on Friend.
Friend has a secret thing for Girl.
Conflict!
Drama!
Seduction!
Love!

Ending A –
Girl and Friend have a HFN.

Ending B –
The Big Misunderstanding!
5 – 20 years later Girl and Friend meet again.
Girl still crushes on Friend.
Friend still has a thing for Girl.
The Big M Conflict!
The Big M Drama!
Much older and wiser smexing!
Love (still, again or better – take your pick)!
Girl and Friend have a HEA.

See. There you go. If you had an older brother you were pretty much guaranteed a boyfriend, or in the case of an older sister a girlfriend.

The thing is now that I’m all growed up (ie less naive and more cynical, but still reading romance… yeah, work that one out) and am seeing this theme rehashed to death manifest itself in queer fiction I’m really wondering if it’s a romantic trope I find convincing.

I’m just not sure.

Of course, it could just be sour grapes.

What about you? Do do you think it’s a bunch of crap and would never happen in RL cos older sibling would be more likely to either (a) beat up the younger sibling or (b) beat up the friend? Or do you like the younger sibling/friend of older sibling pairing?

maybe it’s me, but…

… I’m beginning to think that the hip jut is the new hair flick.

I also feel like channeling Crocodile Dundee in a ‘That’s not a hip. THIS is a HIP.’ kind of a way.

FYI, this has absolutely nothing to do with jealousy whatsoever.

Absolutely. Nothing.

dear publisher

Dear
Fucktard Publisher

You suck big fat hairy donkey ballz.

Why? Allow me to demonstrate…

Aussie book cover previous release:

Aussie book cover latest release:

You fucking changed the book covers!

There is a special place in Hell for publishers who change the God damned book covers mid-series.

And, yes, that would be the same place with the arseholes who start publishing hard covers in a series instead of the mass or trade paperbacks that went before them. Those bastages!!

Oh, and just FYI, I’m contacting the Consumer Protection Agency to see if I have a case for discrimination against people with OCD because you wankers obviously don’t give a toss about we readers who are particular about our book shelves.

I hate you and hope you burn forever down there.

Go screw yourself, Kris.

PS – That latest book cover sucks even more because Eve doesn’t have long hair, which you’d know if you’d ever actually read the series, dumb arse.

the great yaoi swap: tam’s update (& kris’ too!)

Well, guys, I have no clue what happened to some of the other yaoi, but here’s some new stuff that’s floating around out there. If you want to be on the list to receive it (
Kris ETA: Yep, this is open to anyone, but if you reveal RL names and/or become stalkers the Book Goddesses will hunt you down and burn your entire library in front of your eyes. Just sayin’.), leave a message here with which of the books you’d like to receive and what I do is send them out in batches (or individually rather than one huge mass) with mailing labels included (I’m so freaking efficient it’s frightening at times) and once you are finished just pop it in an envelope to the next person on the list. I try to mix it up so they are traveling around the world at all different rates. If you’ve never been in the chain I’ll give you my e-mail and you can send me your snail mail address later.

I know some people are not keen on yaoi manga, but there are quite a few novels in this mix so you can request just novels or just manga or both.

Funny story: I have a pile of books I’ve received lately (Thank you Book Depository, do you always send each book in an individual envelope? How weird.) sitting on my dining room table. My Mom arrived to visit for a week and I had just kind of pushed the books aside and there were some post cards on top. So she’s waiting for her coffee to finish and she’s standing there and next thing I know she says “Hey, these are like comics!” and she’s flipping through some yaoi. Ack. “Umm, yeah, they are Japanese.” “Are they all like this?” “Well, just the manga style.” I have no clue if she realized they were all boys (hard to tell with the art) or if she flipped to any explicit parts. She didn’t comment if she did. LOL Now today she’s home by herself as I couldn’t get off work. Maybe I’ll find she’s been home reading them all day instead of doing my ironing for me. Guess, I better move those up to my bedroom. Ahem.

By the way, I haven’t read many of these as of the time of preparing this post so snarkiness on my part is in no way indicative of the quality of the books but is merely an indication of my snotty mood today. On with the show….

YAOI MANGA

Noodle Shop Affair Vol. 1

Boy in noodle shop has affair. I made that up. 😛 My revised summary: Spoiled son of Yakuza boss falls in love with noodle shop son, must later help him when rival Yakuza threaten noodle boy and his shop/family.

Already read by: Ingrid, Kris and Orannia.

Naughty but Nice Vol. 1

Boy is friendly but very naughty, likes sex. (See, my storylines are way fun.) Two stories – Boy’s homeroom teacher suddenly loses his memory thanks to kid and turns into a raging pedophile convinces boy to move in with him and help him. Man with severe flower allergy meets boy selling flowers – love ensues, along with a fair bit of snot and watering eyes.

Already read by: Ingrid and Tam and is now on route to Jenre, followed by Tracy, Kris and Orannia.

Shy Intentions

One boy is shy, one has intentions. Pretty much it. It’s really a re-telling of the story of how the shy teacher got together with the more confident carpenter. To be honest I thought it was quite romantic which I don’t find much yaoi. A lot less bullying of the shy guy but a more western style relationship developed. I quite liked it.

Golden Prince and Argent King

Self explanatory? Not really. Orphan boy is taken in by rich family with two celebrity brothers. One kind and sophisticated, one not so much. Both want orphan boy. How does it end? No clue, haven’t read it yet. Could this be a yaoi m/m/m? Do they exist? Combined with bro-cest? Hmmm. Okay, I think I’m on a tangent here. Oh and someone should explain that argent is not English for silver.

The Aristocrat and the Desert Prince

Aristocratic boy meets desert prince and hot lovin’ ensues after some borderline non-con. (Are you amazed by my title interpretation because I haven’t read this one either?) Okay, really, prince is kidnapped because he’s cute, he in turn kidnaps the snotty little aristocrat who dissed him on the plane. Revenge and sex ensue. I presume.

Our Kingdom

Two guys have a kingdom and some hot sex. The end. Wait there may be more. Orphan take in by rich family (is this sounding vaguely familiar?) is told he may become their heir. Real heir could care less about money but wants in orphan’s pants. Bad. Orphan might want that too but is confused. As per usual.

YAOI NOVELS

Better than a Dream

Boy had a dream, real sex is better. (I made that up too.) Boy owns Fuuka Café (come on, with a name like that you just KNOW there is going to be plenty of buttsecks) and mysterious stranger appears and “makes” him (How? Not sure.) hire him as live-in employee and lover it seems.

Sweet Admiration

Boy is very admirable; other boy admires him and then fucks him. Sorry – moving on. Boy somehow becomes roommates with older brother’s best friend whom he always admired (see?). Can he control is raging lust … and admiration?

Already read by: Ingrid.

Sleeping with Money

Boy turns into Scrooge McDuck and sleep with money rather than other hot boys. Fool. Ahem. Boy with money trouble looks for a Sugar Daddy and finds a bank president but can’t believe the guy wants more than sex.

Already read by: Ingrid, Kris and Orannia.

The Man who Doesn’t Take Off his Clothes Vol. 1 (& Melissa has Vol. 2 ready to go)

A story about a really stinky homeless guy. Well, maybe not homeless but he must be getting ripe. Boy works at cosmetic firm where he clashes with his hot arrogant boss over marketing. The rumour is the boss never takes off his clothes even during sex. Boy finds out truth (I’m assuming … hoping, or maybe we have to wait for Vol. 2.)

Already read by: Ingrid.

So there you have it. A lovely list of yaoi waiting for new homes when I get them finished. I have to get working on that. Leave me a message with your requests or just leave me a message to tell me not to be so bloody disrespectful to these hard working authors whose works that I haven’t even read I just mocked. Sigh. Sorry sorry, it won’t happen again … for a week at least.

ETA: Also available are –

The Guilty Vols. 1 – 3

Toya Sakurai only went into the publishing business to work with his favorite author, Kai Hodaka, one of the top-selling mystery writers of all time. And now he’s getting the chance to do exactly that! But the demands of the job are more than he ever expected.

Already read by: Melissa.

Rising Storm

Reona, a college student, works part-time at the Kaizaki family’s castle. Ruling over this castle is the young master, Kaizaki-sama. Amid chores and strict obedience, who would have thought that Kaizaki-sama’s “discipline” of Reona would lead to a Cinderfella romance?!

Already read by: Melissa.

Don’t Worry Momma

While visiting a small, deserted island for work, Yuichi and his boss find themselves left behind by mistake. They must survive until someone notices they are missing, a task made more difficult by the incompetent, spoiled boss Imakura. Though they struggle for even the basic necessities Yuichi finds his steel facade starting to crumble!
