things that make you go o_O

gratuitous cookie

There are many variations of ‘swallowed him to the hilt’, ‘swallowed him till his nose was buried deep in pubes’, blah, blah.

I have to say, though, that whenever I read the phrase ‘swallowed him whole’ it always reminds me of two things:

(a) that X-Files episode in which a Native American legend comes to life and is forced into eating people to cure them of their illnesses (it made me hurl), and

(b) Moby Dick.

I think the latter has real m/m possibilities.

fuck it fridays

Can I just say that it is my fervent hope and desire that there is a special place in hell for those people who do not sterilise their animals, especially their cats, and then abandon or dump them when the reality of having two adults and a litter of kittens is apparently too hard to deal with in any kind of responsible and humane way.

Oh, and for those of you who haven’t thought about the consequences of not sterilising your animals, just remember that Karma is a bitch with big claws that will rip your fucking throat out if you don’t do something about it asap.

Here endth this community announcement.

the jock and the geek

There’s been a lot of talk lately, including here, about the use and overuse of some plot devices in m/m romance. The one I want to talk about today is the ‘geek and jock’.

We’re all (very) familiar with this trope. Yanno, it’s where the geek gets either picked on or ignored by the jock during high school because he’s either too different and/or out about his sexuality, they meet up at some gay bar in the future, acknowledge the crushes they had on each other when they were teenagers, fuck like bunnies, and then live HEA. The end.

I realised the other day that not only do I have a fondness for this theme, but I’m actually willing to forgive a lot in terms of rehashed characters and plot-hole story lines.

I’m blaming my love of John Hughes movies together with my non-US fascination with the American high school caste system (which I’m certain is no different to ours or others, yet adding cheerleaders just seems to add a whole new level of bitchiness to the scenario).

Granted it does seem a bit weird, but probably not as strange as asking someone’s daughter to report back on her first day of high school complete with pictures of the various cliques so said person can study the strange phenomena of a North American high school kinda first hand.

Ummm…

Sooo…

How do you feel about the ‘jock and geek’ plot device? Do you read it with a sense of nostalgia like me or do you hate it with a passion? Do you have any fave or crap examples of books that feature these characters? Speak.

maybe it’s me, but…

… actually I’m pretty positive it’s not just me this time.

I found the below and thought I’d share it with all of you, who, regardless of whether you’ve read/not read or love/hate the Twilight series, are as fucking sick as I am of all the damn hype.

Enjoy!

kris, slayer extraordinaire

Forgetting the fact that I am expecting two more books from a previous order at The Book Depository, that I just ordered 7 yaoi manga during their sale, that while I was at the Mumma’s yesterday I snitched a YA from her teacherley carton of ‘let’s see what class sets of books we can order’ and that I forgot I was participating in a someone-else-pick-a-book-for-me challenge, I proved myself to be an awesome tbr slayer over the weekend by killing dead 8 (including the one stolen from the Mumma) print books. Yay me!!!

Granted I’m likely to only hold the position of tbr slayer (very) temporarily, but still…

I AM SO FRIGGIN’ AWESOME!!

Did I mention that I also picked up a book whilst shopping on Saturday?? Umm, let’s just forget that one then, shall we…

I AM STILL FRIGGIN’ AWESOME!!!

tam’s guest post: toys for boys

Vibrators, dildos and cock rings, oh my. Are there enough in m/m romance? And why am I even thinking about this you ask? Umm, no comment. Anyway, I noticed that very rarely are there toys utilized in m/m romance books. Now the exception is BDSM books (of varying degrees) where toys seem to be a more integral part of the lifestyle, but with your typical vanilla romance they don’t show up very often. Why?

Is it because many of the stories are shorter covering from a few hours to a few weeks of a romance and you’re unlikely to pull out the big guns (dildos) on the first date? Is it because there is the school of thought that says you only get into toys when things get boring and dull and you need to spice it up and if you are truly in love you’ll never need them? Are they too naughty for nice boys and not “romantic” enough? Are they only for use when you can’t get the real thing? Do you wish there were more toys in your romance or are you content with the level you’ve found? Do you own any toys? (Just had to ask cuz I’m nosey that way. 😉 )

maybe it’s me (again), but…

… ever closed the cover on your gazillionth ‘rescue me from the stalker’ romance and thought to yourself either

(a) there’s a heck of a lot more psychos in the US world than you originally thought, or

(b) you’ve miscalculated the percentage of authors who are unconsciously using this plot device to express their own deep-seated desire to be the object/ee of obsessive love in a Ladyhawke-if-I-can’t-have-you-no-one-shall kind of a way??

Just a little something I’ve been pondering.

maybe it’s me, but…

… I have mixed feelings about the May/December relationship in romance. Sometimes it works for me and other times it just plain squicks me out.

When I read the above book last weekend, I was reminded of a great post Jen did on this very topic because this story represented one of those times when this theme didn’t work for me.

Thinking about it, I realised my issues came down to the age gap between the protags; one was 24 and the other 49. After all, said the grey cells, how can there be a HEA if one of the guys will probably die first of old age??

It then occurred to me that it could ‘just’ be a HFN, but for some reason this just wouldn’t compute with me for this story. Then I started wondering about what makes a HFN work and that caused my brain to meltdown.

It also led me to believe that this might actually be an instance where it could just be me.

But what about you? How do you feel about the May/December relationship? When are the times it does/n’t work for you?
