best of teen flicks

Yesterday’s post sparked a couple of us recalling our favourite movies from when we were growing up, including those who did so in the awesome age of teen flicks that was the 1980s.

I already mentioned that Sixteen Candles was definitely high up on my list as was The Breakfast Club, Weird Science and, naturally, Footloose.

However, there were – and still are – three movies which hands down beat all by the sheer number of times I watched them.

So, without further ado, my teen year’s ‘best of’ flicks:

To this day, I can still quote entire sections of these movies when I watch them. 🙂

Now, what about you? What were your fave films as a teen?

maybe it’s me, but…

I read the above book the other day and was highly offended by the following:

My thoughts were interrupted by a sudden question in an impudent tone. “Can you help me find a movie?” It sounded like a challenge.

I looked up to find the skinny punk looking at me expectantly. He was quite a few years younger than me, probably early to midtwenties. He was about five-seven. He was wearing combat boots, a T-shirt that had been washed so many times I could practically see through it, and baggy jeans that were low on his hips. At least his ass wasn’t showing.

“Maybe,” I said. I would have liked to be able to just say yes, but it would have been a lie.

“Can’t really figure out your system.”

“They’re alphabetical.”

He gave me a lopsided smirk which might have been cute if it wasn’t so annoying. “What alphabet you usin’?”

He had me there. I had given up on the alphabetical thing a long time ago. “They’re grouped by genre.” I pointed to the little labels at the top of the shelves.

“In theory, man, but they’re all fucked up.”

I was starting to get annoyed. Not least of all because he was probably right. Still, I didn’t really want this punk giving me lessons on how to run my business. “Like what?”

“Like this.” He pointed to the shelf next to him. It was labeled Classics. “Sixteen Candles is not a classic.”

What. The. Fuck.

Sixteen Candles is SO a friggin’ classic.

zowie, it’s yaoi! *hehehe*

I seem to be talking about yaoi a lot lately; both on and offline, so I thought it would be a great idea to give people a dedicated post for sharing their favourite books, authors and artists with other readers.

I’ll start then, shall I?? These are a couple of the books firmly on my keeper shelf:

Totally Captivated series by Hajin Yoo

Technically this is manwha (Korean version of yaoi). I would strongly recommend to anyone that they read past the first book otherwise you might be left scratching your head. The second book will have you hooked and, by the time you close the cover on the sixth, you will be completely satisfied albeit sorry that it all had to come to an end.

The Crimson Spell series by Ayano Yamane

Best. Fantasy. Yaoi. Ever!! She’s going to be at Yaoi-Con! *SQUEEEE* Seriously, though, for those of you who love their stories with adventure, magic, quests, powerful and sexy wizards, honourable but cursed heroes, and nasty bad guys then this series is definitely for you. It’s bloody terrific.

So tell me… what are your faves? 🙂

PS – Don’t forget that if you’re curious about The Great Yaoi Swap you can just email me to find out more. 🙂

the kris ‘n’ good books sextiom/mary: a is for…

The Kris ‘n’ Good Books Sextiom/mary:

An A-Z dictionary and guide for sexual and other interesting-type terms for readers of m/m romance and erotica.

*****

A is for….

Arsehole (Translation from Oz = Asshole).

M/M is about boys having sex with each other. Get used to it. It will help to think of it as clean, buffed and polished, smelling like a rosebud and tasting like strawberries.

Trust me on this.

my m/m rut challenge: a reminder

Just a reminder that the deadline for my awesome m/m ‘get me the fuck out of this rut’ challenge is up on 17 March.

How it works (again):

1. Pick a book from an m/m sub-genre or in a style (eg 1st POV) or form (eg graphic) that you usually avoid like the plague. This includes those of you who want to pop their m/m romance cherry as part of the challenge.

2. Read the whole story. No DNFs allowed.

3. Write a review – long or short – and do the linky thing back here. For the peeps who don’t have a blog you can put your review in the comments section. (I’ll do a post specifically for these reviews/links on 18 March.)

4. Once it’s over and done with all those who participated will be put in the draw for a $20 ARe voucher.

5. I’m even giving away $20 for the person who reads the most books out of their comfort zone.

Now get cracking!

PS – Don’t forget that author Aleksandr Voinov has kindly offered a free copy his novella Test of Faith co-written with Raev Gray to a reader interested in dipping their toes into the m/m historical waters.

maybe it’s me, but…

Val of Obsidian Bookshelf did a great post the other day about writing m/m sex scenes between two or three partners and the difficulty of using the one pronoun.

This is so very true. I mean, how many times have you read a story and thought to yourself ‘I’ve no friggin’ idea who is doing what to whom!’? It can sometimes be very confusing.

One of the ways that authors deal with this issue is by using descriptors like ‘the other man’, ‘the older man’, etc.

I made the comment that I don’t like those which seem odd within the context of a sex scene. For example, if the descriptor is ‘the lawyer’ or ‘the mechanic’ it throws me out of the story because I always wonder what the hell their profession has to do with them fucking.

Later, I remembered something else that jarred me when I was reading a m/m last weekend. This was the descriptor ‘his lover’ and it was used during the first sex scene the characters had together.

To me, the word ‘lover’ indicates a certain level of intimacy and/or history between two people which is more than just their first encounter.

Obviously this will depend on the level of connection between the characters that the author has been able to convey as well as the context of the scene itself, but using ‘lover’ in circumstances other than these just doesn’t work for me personally.

However, maybe I have a narrow interpretation of the word?

I’d be interested to know what you think.

my book boyfriend

I got tagged by Ms Moonlight and Janna to do The Gutter Girls’ ‘Build Your Own Book Boyfriend’ meme:

We all have our favourite book boyfriends and now you have the chance to create one just for yourself and your fantasies! How do you play? Fill out the quiz below, post a picture of sexy man and tag five (5) other book addicts to do the same. Don’t forget to pop to their blogs as let them know they have been tagged! Once tagged… you have do do the same, grab the button, answer the questions, and keep it rolling! But don’t forget the picture of the sexy man! It doesn’t have to match your fantasy man, just a little eye candy for the rest of us… heheheee!

So I started thinking about hair colour and style, eye colour and facial features, height and body type, visible age, bangability (ie kinky, bi, size), human or other, paranormal skills, interests, habitat, social skills, etc, etc…

I soon came to the conclusion that what I really want in a book boyfriend is someone who will not only keep me in the high number of books to which I’ve grown accustomed, but will leave me alone – when I want to, that is – to read them.

Oh, and he should look like this:

I don’t think that’s too much to ask, do you??
